Republic
The first coins minted by the Roman Republic were silver didrachms from 280 BC. These were replaced in 211 BC by the silver denarius, quinarius (half denarius), sestertius (quarter denarius) and victoriatus (drachm). Republic gold commenced with the stater and half stater in 217 BC.
