Harold I ‘Harefoot’ (1035 – 1040) silver penny (S1165) (1.13 gms, 18 mm) Fleur-de-Lys type, Chester mint, issued 1038-1040, moneyer Sweartinc. Obverse: diademed and cuirassed bust of King Harold I facing left, armed with round shield and sceptre terminating with fleur-de-lis, mintmark cross pattee and HARO (LD RE) C around. Reverse: long voided cross with each limb united at their bases by a central circle enclosing a single pellet, fleur-de-lis flanked by two pellets in angles, mintmark cross pattee SPERT(IN) ON LE around (note S is retrograde). Harold I Harefoot, of the House of Knytlinga, was Regent then King of England. Absolutely charming piece with wonderful portrait, some typical flat spots, but legends clear and all attributable.

Highly sought after coin, obverse slightly off centre, strongly struck, beautiful in hand and graded extremely fine by Nobles. Provenance: Ex R Pankhurst Collection.

1154-1189 Henry II Tealby Penny class B1 (S1338). Canterbury mint circa 1161-5, 1.48 gms, 20 mm, moneyer Wiulf. Obverse: crowned bust of Henry II facing forward, wearing armour and mantle and holding cross pattee-tipped sceptre in right hand, no hair visible (North Fig. 3), legend hENRI REX ANGL. Reverse: small cross potent central, smaller cross potent in each angle, inner beaded border and legend [WIVL]F: ON: CA[NTO]. Remarkably well struck with outstanding class B portrait and full obverse legend. Typical irregular flan. The reverse central cross and crosslets very clear and enough legend to easily attribute moneyer and mint. North 953/1 var (obv legend as Class A). A very superior example.

Obverse: neat round crowned bust of Henry III facing forward with beard comprising 3 pellets either side of a large central pellet, legend hENRICVS REX IIII. Reverse: voided double lined long cross with trefoil of three pellets in quadrants. Part of a recoinage of earlier short cross pennies with aim to limit clipping; lovely example with superb portrait. Slabbed and graded by NGC (ref. 8418293-032) as aU53.
