Rare Coins Australia

Rare Coins Australia was launched in January 2023. We focus on the sale of pre-decimal English coins, along with a smaller but growing offering of Roman coins.

Rare Coins Australia is the premium retailer for English coins in Australia. We have the widest range and largest stock by a substantial margin.

English coinage is a very long series and was also an important currency for Australia until 1910. Roman coins date back to the 3rd Century BC and are still being found throughout its empire.

Rare Coins Australia is an online business offering a wide range of rare and quality coins appealing to both collectors and investors.

Why collect coins?

Collecting coins is a great hobby and lots of fun! Coins can be collected from all over the world, or you can specialise in one country, one period, one monarch, or one type of coin. What’s most exciting is that even old coins can be highly affordable – for example many interesting old English and Roman coins are available for less than $50.

Many collectors start because of their innate fascination with money or antiquities, or because of their love of history. It’s aways exhilarating to handle a coin that was circulating centuries ago, imagining all the people who could have owned it over the years.

Coin designs usually represent important people or events, can be produced as symbols of pride and national identity, and give unique insights into the past. Individual coins can provide a wealth of information about how people used to think and what they believed, and the functioning of their society at that time. Sometimes coins contain the only images we have of leaders from the past.

Archaeologists are always very interested in un-earthing coins as they can be used to date ancient structures and even the progress of wars, such as when and where Roman armies advanced. Coins were also a mechanism for leaders to create influence and market their prowess.

Coins are a great favourite for metal detecting enthusiasts – it doesn’t seem long before another ancient hoard is found. Heritage laws vary between countries, but often, as in England, finders can be keepers after the British Museum has done its evaluation and a share is given to the land owner.

To the enthusiast, coins are beautiful. Many designs are an exquisite work of art. Ancient coins are also full of mystery, with the gods of the day often represented in different forms. Coins change with age and exposure to the elements, but the ageing process can create great aesthetic appeal. Many collectors enjoy displaying their coins or sharing them with family, friends and other collectors.

Why invest in coins?

Coin collecting can also be an investment. This is especially true for rare coins and coins maintained in excellent condition. The rarity of a coin depends on how many were produced originally and how many can still be accounted for. The condition of a coin depends on whether it has been in circulation or not, and if it has, how much wear and tear it has sustained. Whilst coins in mint condition attract the highest prices, everyday collectors enjoy seeing the wear associated with circulation, and the influence of the elements on the coin’s individual character. Over time coins usually increase in value – sometimes dramatically – so coins are a market for serious investors as well as collectors.
